Busters Bar have their cake and eat it for Afghan Heroes
Businesses in Playa Flamenca banded together when Paul and Julie from Busters Bar decided to have a race night in aid of Afghan Heroes. Paul, who is ex-military, got together with Jackie Lawson, who is the Regional Coordinator in Spain for Afghan Heroes, and runs Expats 4 Afghan Heroes.
The night was well attended, and with 8 horses in each of the 10 races there was plenty of scope for ownership and betting. Amongst the backers for the night were Cilla Top Hair, Steve The Barber, Homes in The Sun, Quick Save, King Cod, Macey’s, R and P Foods, Crystal Clear Windows and Geoff and Sue, who donated a bottle of Moet Chandon.
Jackie, who was there on the night said, “People were very generous, and when the last horse went up for auction there was a frenzy of bidding. There were plenty of winners on the night, but the biggest winners were Afghan Heroes.”
Afghan Heroes is known for the Mothers Day Bike Ride through Wooton Bassett. Their aim is to help the soldiers posted in Afghanistan. Among the projects that they have completed are, donating money to Selly Oak Hospital and The 3rd Rifle plus they sent 10,000 gift boxes – one to every soldier stationed in Afghanistan. They have recently bought a professional pool table which was presented to the lads at “I don’t know if people are aware that Afghan Heroes is helping young troops by asking what they want. We are all about helping people, and many more projects are planned to help give dignity back to these lads and lasses who are so young and so brave” The giving continued at Busters Bar when Shirley Roberts and Mark Filer made and brought a huge iced fruit cake all the way from Wales in aid of Afghan Heroes. An airline kindly allowed the cake through customs as hand luggage, which was very kind of them as the cake weighed in the region of 11 lbs! The “guess the weight of the cake” raised more money for Afghan Heroes. The winner of the cake was one of Busters kitchen staff, Chris Edge. Chris and the regulars decided to have their cake and eat it by slicing it up and selling it for 50 cents a slice.
Busters Bar have so far raised €1049 for Afghan Heroes. They continue to support the charity by holding a summer darts league with “Busters Afghans” and “Busters Heroes” competing with other bars in the area.
Expats 4 Afghan Heroes has so far raised over €6,000 for Afghan Heroes this year, and is aiming to raise €20,000.
The more money we raise, the more projects Afghan Heroes can do to make our troops lives bearable. They are the “True Heroes”.
